Attn: MA Residents... Free Experienced Rider Courses For Sportbike Riders

Quoted from an email:

PLEASE PASS THIS INFO ON TO A FELLOW RIDER THAT COULD BENEFIT!!! (it may even save their life.....at least some money)

No, you've read right!
The RMV and Governor's Highway Safety Bureau have received a grant to reduce motorcycle rider's injuries and fatalities.
The target audience is:
1) sport bike riders
2) the rider has never taken a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course
3) a rider that is still riding on a permit/does not have a motorcycle endorsement on their license
4) riders between the ages of 25 and 40, but not exclusive.

The first opportunities will take place in Acton on Sat 23 May or Sun 24 May.
The next opportunities will take place in Seekonk on Sat 27 June or Sun 28 June
The course is a one-day affair and will be held from 10a-6pm; classroom from 10a-12 noon, riding 1p-6p

To take advantage of this free (yes, free, but with stipulations), please call our office at 508-278-0172.
When you call we will ask for your contact info (name, address, telephone, email, date of birth, learner's permit/license number)
Finally, since we want to make this available to as many riders as possible and assure that the rider will attend, we will ask for a valid credit card number.
In the case that the rider does not attend, the rider will be charged $50; if the rider does attend, credit card information will be destroyed.

This course will be taught by expert sport bike riders and certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) and the Registry of Motor Vehicles / Massachusetts Rider Education Program.
Successful completion of this course will entitle the rider to by-pass the RMV road test and receive motorcycle license endorsement, IF they have a valid permit and have paid $15 to the RMV for their license. Also, they will receive a course completion card from the MSF, which will entitle them to motorcycle insurance discounts.

You can register by filling out our standard registration form below and emailing or mailing it back to us or call us at 508-278-0172.
We have been awarded sufficient grant money to serve only 48 riders, act early, as it will be first come first served

If you question the sincerity or validity of this offer, please contact Gene Carabine at RMV at 413-781-0633 for validation.
Thanks

O/T

How does one even get insurance in Taxxichussets without a valid endorsement on their DL? And without insurance or DL how do they get financing for a bike (I know damn well that a HUGE percentage of bike owners are riding bikes owned by the bank). And for that matter, how does one in Taxxichussets even plate a motorcycle without an endorsement on the DL and insurance. I thought it was one of those states that gave you a run-around with these things?

Or is this one of those "stimulus" plans that cost nothing but look good to those proposing them because nobody can actually take advantage of it...

Maybe it is all a trap to get people to come in and get their free class and when they send in all the info they get back a ticket???

LOL -revenue! Huge profits for .gov! :D

Re: O/T

I think so long as you have A license you can get the bike registered and insured. But I'm not certain of the details as I got my license first.

Re: O/T

You do not need an MC endorsement to insure or register the vehicle in MA.

I purchased my bike before I had my license.

48 riders? Total? That seems like a small scale to me. I'm having trouble seeing how bug an effect this will have on overall rider safety if they can only teach 48 riders. Is this just a pilot program that will expand later?

Even though I don't even vaguely qualify for this, I'm really glad they're doing it. I hope the class fills up and its instructors are thoroughly prepared for what they're getting into ;P.

I feel about this the way I felt about Harley's $99 MSF course for women: what's so special about them?!? I want it cheap/free too!

I do understand the premise, as they're targeting high-risk groups. I understand that because I do want any and all training I can get, don't ride a sportbike, did get my endorsement, etc. that I'm much lower-risk than their target audience. But it still leaves me jealous.

Under the "rough times for HOG" heading, they're no longer offering the $99 basic course for women in my city: you have to attend one of their sales pitch events ("garage parties") and a few winners of a drawing get the $99 course.

It's still very worth every penny for the $200+ going rate in my state, though. I talked at least one (possibly two) people into taking it at full price anyway.

Borrow a sportbike.

I think I may sign up for this and ride the CBR F3 to the course, 'cause I'm not sure they'd tell me I qualify if I showed up on the R11S. :-P

Hmmm, you're on the same could-be-a-sportbike-could-be-a-tourer line I am. I wonder how they define "sportbike."

Wait... Mass is giving something out for free? There's got to be a catch somewhere. Although I'll freely admit the tolls on the Mass Pike are a lot cheaper than the NYS Thruway tolls.

IIRC, Mass Pike is still free if you get on at the NY state border, and get off before the I-91 exit. I don't travel it too often, and my EZpass takes care of it, so I haven't verified that recently.

Mass Pike's toll operators have often refused to take my money and waved me through. I do not know why. Maybe they are like bartenders and are allowed so many freebies per day, and I'm unusual enough to get more than my share of the freebies?

It's free unless you're towing a trailer.
